One of the most common mistakes I come across when auditing Google Ads accounts is businesses spending thousands of pounds every month without generating the return they should be.
In fact, I saw this exact scenario during a strategy call just last week.
The business had a fantastic product, a well-designed website and a clear market. It was exactly the type of business that should perform well on Google Ads because it was offering a solution to a problem that people actively search for.
So why wasn’t it working?
After carrying out a detailed audit, it became clear there were several missed opportunities within the account. But the biggest issue wasn’t the campaigns themselves: it was the strategy.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make in Google Ads is increasing your budget before your campaigns are delivering the return you want.
Unless your campaigns are genuinely limited by budget and you’re losing a significant % of valuable searches, increasing your spend is unlikely to solve the problem. In many cases, it simply means you’ll spend more money on campaigns that aren’t performing as they should.
It’s easy to be tempted by Google’s “Limited by budget” recommendation. After all, Google wants you to spend more. But before increasing your budget, ask yourself whether your campaigns are already generating a profitable return.
If the answer is no, adding more budget is rarely the right first step.
Instead, take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
- Are you targeting the right search terms?
- Are your audience signals helping Google’s AI learn?
- Is your campaign structure fit for purpose?
- Is your product feed fully optimised?
- Are your landing pages converting?
- Are your conversion tracking and bidding strategies set up correctly?
Google Ads is a highly technical platform that requires regular optimisation and strategic decision-making. Throwing more money at a campaign without understanding what’s holding it back rarely leads to better results.
My advice is simple: fix the strategy before increasing the budget.
Once your campaigns are delivering a consistent and profitable return, that’s the time to scale with confidence.
